One of the most scenic cities in North America, Vancouver, B.C. is almost entirely ringed by water and boasts the stunning backdrop of the Canadian Rockies. A diverse culture with Asian, American Indian and British influences is reflected in the city’s cuisine, shopping and eclectic attractions.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Stop by Stanley! Stanley Park is 1,000 acres of lush lawns and small forests, plus hosts two great family attractions—the Children’s Zoo and Vancouver Aquarium. Kids will also enjoy the miniature railway traversing the park.
Step2
Visit the simply named Art Gallery, which calls a neoclassical former courthouse home and showcases works from North America and Europe.
Step3
Indulge yourself in some of the city’s Asian heritage by spending an afternoon in the busy Chinatown neighborhood. A particular joy here is the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Gardens, which provides a tranquil oasis through its mission of perfectly combining water, rock, plants and architecture.
Step4
Set aside some time for Robson Street, a lively shopping and dining strip blending upscale stores with funky cafés and much more. The heart of the shopping lies between Hornby and Bute streets, a three-block haven of big-names from Armani to Banana Republic to Virgin Records.
Step5
For a trip back in time to old Vancouver, make a short stop in the Gastown neighborhood, with plenty of old buildings and streets lined with brick. This touristy section is a menagerie of antiquaries, galleries and hip ethnic eateries.
Step6
A unique attraction paying tribute to the area’s Native American culture, the Museum of Anthropology is a treasure trove of handcrafted creations. Most notable are the dozens of imposing totem poles prominently displayed throughout the museum.
Step7
Spend some time on Granville Island, which has undergone a tremendous renaissance over the last quarter-century and is now a delightful enclave of restaurants and theaters, enhanced by a lovely waterfront and enlivened by a renowned Public Market.

Tips & Warnings

  • Shutterbugs won’t want to forget their cameras on a trip to Vancouver, as countless dramatic photo-ops await.

on 8/16/2007 Great ideas. As someone who lived there for a few years (right by Stanley Park!) I would add that to walk along the seawall (or rent a bike) is amazing. Then walk it along English Bay, towards the aquatic centre and then take the little water taxi across to Granville Island. It's a great outdoor activity, inexpensive and a great way to see the city. On the way back take the ferry to Yaletown and walk up Robson!
