Things You'll Need:
- A computer with Internet connectivity to make reservations
-
Step 1
Check out both the historic Upper District and more modern Lower District. Baroque and medieval architecture literally overlooks the newer buildings designed by some of today's top architects. A range of accommodations can be found in both areas.
-
Step 2
Bregenz offers warm summers with a relaxing breeze off the lake, followed by a snow-covered winter. Either season is perfect to visit the city.
-
Step 3
Leave your pocket translator at home. While German is the official language, almost everyone in Bregenz speaks English.
-
Step 1
After arriving in Europe, fly to Friedrichshafen, Germany. A shuttle runs to Bregenz for about $20. Reservations must be booked in advance.
-
Step 2
Ride the rails. Bregenz is the largest station in western Austria, with dozens of trains arriving from Zurich, Munich, Innsbruck, and Vienna daily. The train station is within walking distance of most accommodations, but a hire a cab if you have luggage.
-
Step 3
Rent a car and see the Austrian countryside. Driving from Innsbruck Airport into Austria is a snap.
-
Step 1
To book accommodations, contact Vorarlberg Tourism and Hotels at 011 (+43) 05574 425250 or visit their Web site (see Resources below).
-
Step 2
Stay in a castle, or just visit one. Deuring Schlssle is a 17th-century Baroque style mini-castle that offers luxurious accommodations, but you will have to walk uphill to get back to your room each night.
-
Step 3
Consider staying in the Lower District if you are traveling on a budget.
-
Step 4
Try a hostel, especially if you are backpacking through Austria.
-
Step 5
Look for "K" if you love cheese. About 50 small hotels along the Bregenz Forest Cheese Road, just outside the city, bear the mark of the "K," meaning they serve local specialities.
-
Step 6
If money is no object, stay in one of the historical hotels in the Upper District.
-
Step 1
Visit during the Bregenzer Festspiele summer music festival. The Vienna Symphonic Orchestra performs on an open-air floating stage at the edge of the lake.
-
Step 2
Ride the gondola up Pfander Mountain for stunning views. No accommodations are available in the park, but there are a few restaurants to choose from.
-
Step 3
Enjoy the many cafes serving ice cream in summer and warmed wine in winter. They dot the shoreline and many are located in hotels.
