1. Bring your cameras. Tourists flock to Lahaina in the winter to watch the humpback whales in the Auau Channel. This is Lahaina's—and Maui's—busiest time of the year.

2. Fly direct into Kahului Airport on Maui for access to Lahaina. From there you can rent a car and drive the less than 25 miles to the town.

4. Stay on the beach and experience the charm of the historic town and fun in the sand. Mid-range oceanfront rooms cost from $185 to $265 per night.
5. Consider staying in a hostel for budget accommodations. Patey's Maui Hostel in Lahaina, located a short walk from all the action, has a variety of rooms available. Shared gender-specific dorm rooms are $25 per night. A double private room with a bathroom is $75 per night. Other accommodations are also available.
6. Consider renting a villa in Lahaina for truly luxurious accommodations. They offer privacy and flexibility and are convenient for groups and families. A typical villa can feature six bedrooms, upscale furnishings and a pool with an ocean view. Prices range around $1,500 to $2,000 per night for eight people.

7. Shop 'til you drop. The main street in Lahaina, Front Street, features a variety of shops and restaurants that cater to tourists. Finding parking can be a challenge if you're not staying in the area.

Tips & Warnings

• Look into flying into Honolulu and taking a commuter flight to Maui. Some flights from the mainland may be cheaper into Honolulu.
• During the peak season, there tends to be road traffic around Lahaina and on Front Street. Give yourself more travel time than you think you need.
