    Know Your Destination

  1. Step 1

Bring your hiking boots. Kauai, Hawaii, is famous for spectacular waterfalls and lush green forests. Kauai gets more rain than any other Hawaiian island.

  2. Step 2

Be aware that there are 5 regions of Kauai. The West Side, the North Shore, the South Shore, the Coconut Coast and Lihue Kalapaki each offer different attractions. For example, the South Shore is famous for its pristine beaches, snorkeling and accommodations.

  3. Find Transportation Information

  4. Step 1

Get a rental car. The best way to explore the Kauai is by car. There are plenty of scenic backroads leading to the more rugged parts of the island, and one road encircles the bulk of Kauai's coastline.

  5. Step 2

Fly direct to Kauai's Lihue Airport or connect from Honolulu International Airport. United Airlines flies direct to Kauai from Los Angeles and San Francisco, and American Airlines flies direct from Los Angeles. Kauai is only a 25-minute commuter flight from Honolulu.

  6. Choose Your Accomodations

  7. Step 1

To book accommodations, contact Kauai Visitors Bureau at (800) 262-1400 or visit their Web site (see Resources below).

  8. Step 2

Think about renting a condo. When traveling with a large family or a group, you may find it more economical to stay in a condo with multiple bedrooms. Besides potentially saving money on accommodations, a kitchen will allow you to cook for yourself and save money on meals.

  9. Step 3

Splurge on hotel accommodations by taking advantage of some of the most luxurious hotels in Hawaii. Princeville Hotel at Hanalai is the most famous resort on the island. It is built into the Hanalei Bay cliffs and features two world-class golf courses. The 252-room hotel ranges in price from $500 for a standard room to $5,100 for the Royal Suite.

  10. Step 4

Consider ecotourism. Kauai has a number of campsites available to those seeking to experience the island's natural beauty on a budget. YMCA Camp Sloggett offers tent camping sites for $10 per person per night. Hostel accommodations and group accommodations are also available for $20 per person per night.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you want to camp on Kauai, you must have a permit. Contact the Department of Parks and Recreation beforehand to avoid penalties (see resources).
