Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet access

Know Your Destination

Step1
Know your local geography--Dover is located 90 miles east of Washington, D.C., and 90 miles south of Philadelphia.
Step2
Pack for the appropriate season. In the summer, temperatures reach the high 80s; in winter, they drop to the low 20s.

Plan Your Transportation

Step1
Get around Dover easily by renting a car. Major rental agencies offer area services.
Step2
To avoid driving, travel via taxi. Dover taxicabs are generally safe and reliable.
Step3
To arrive by air, fly into Baltimore Washington International Airport or Philadelphia International Airport.
Step4
Arrange transport between either airport and your hotel with a local shuttle service. One-way fees cost approximately $50.

Select Your Accommodations

Step1
To book accommodations, contact Kent County Tourism Convention and Visitors Bureau at (302) 734-1736 or visit their Web site (see Resources, below).

Consider staying near the Dover Downs entertainment complex. Nearby hotels will cost between $109 and $185.
Step3
Consider budget accommodations. Prices range from $45 to $100.

Stay in downtown Dover to be near the city's historic buildings, the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts and downtown's unique collection of galleries and businesses.

Places of Interest

Step1
Check out the Dover International Speedway, recognized as one of the best speedway tracks in the United States. It hosts the NASCAR Invitational as well as the Craftsman Truck Series.
Step2
Take the family to the Delaware Agricultural Complex. The complex features a museum and a village area depicting preindustrial village life.
Step3
Tour a range of museums, from the Delaware Archaeology Museum to the Biggs Museum of American Art to the Johnson Victrola Museum.

Tips & Warnings

  • In Kent County, Dover residents and the Amish coexist peacefully. To get a closer look at this interaction, participate in the annual Amish Country Bike Tour. The tour winds through Amish settlements, and friendly chats are encouraged.
  • Amish buggies share the road with cars. Exercise caution and be courteous.
  • Each year, two major NASCAR events fill Dover's hotels and motels. Find out the weekends on which these races will be held (usually during June and September), and try to avoid them if you're not attending the race. Otherwise, expect to make reservations eight months in advance.
  • Always check in advance to see whether your chosen attractions are closed on a particular day of the week or during a particular time of year.
  • Delaware offers tax-free shopping, so don't hold back on souvenir purchases.
