Travel along the 450 miles of Lake Havasu's shoreline and you'll understand why it's the centerpiece and namesake of this small Arizona town. Take a second look, though, and discover all of the other attractions the town has to offer, including the London Bridge and desert landscapes.

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet access

Know Your Destination

Step1
Learn about the area. The city was established by Robert M. Culloch in 1963 and developed as a planned community. The old mining town nearby, which was established in the early 20th century, has been absorbed by Lake Havasu's growth.
Step2
Check out a famous landmark. The former London Bridge now finds its home in Lake Havasu. The bridge originally spanned the River Thames and now provides a crossing over a man-made canal that leads from the lake to Thompson Bay.
Step3
Bring a swimsuit. Much of the community's recreation revolves around water activities such as fishing, water sports and boating.

Getting From Place to Place in Lake Havasu

Step1
Get a good street map. Driving around Lake Havasu is not easy, and you may even need the help of local residents. Several intersecting loop roads can cause confusion for visitors.
Step2
Catch a ride. City transportation is available if you'd rather not navigate the loop roads yourself. Each ride is $3, and the service can take you anywhere in the city. Reservations cannot be made in advance, but it is generally just a short wait before pick-up.
Step3
Fly into Lake Havasu Municipal Airport, which has daily connections to larger airports. You may choose to fly in to the larger Phoenix, Las Vegas or Laughlin, Nevada, airports and drive a short distance to the city instead.

Choose Your Accommodations in Lake Havasu

Step1
To book accommodations, contact Lake Havasu Convention and Visitors Bureau at (928) 453-3444 or visit their Web site (see Resources below).
Step2
Stay in luxury accommodations. Lake Havasu has condominiums and extended-stay rooms available for rent on the shoreline, many with amenities such as golf, pools and spas.
Step3
Find budget-friendly accommodations by staying in a national motel chain or a local hotel. A few have rates starting around $50 per night and offer some of the amenities found in more expensive places.
Step4
Experience the beautiful shoreline by camping on it. Many RV parks and campsites are available, and several have common areas with pools, convenience stores, game rooms and organized activities.

Tips & Warnings

  • Book your stay early if you plan on traveling to Lake Havasu during the spring. College students on spring break frequent the area, and accommodations become more difficult to find during this time.
