Mutual funds are for people that feel that self directed investing in stock market is time consuming, complex, and scary. "Smart money" can't outperform the market because the market can replicate the actions of smart money and thus drive any excess returns to zero. With bonds yields historic 4-6% lower than stocks, playing the market game your self is best. Go 2 long and one short, few options and your looking good. You can early what a good mutual fund does in years- in weeks. I work for a fund company and would not ever invest in a mutual fund just to fill the pockets of everyone at the company; ie money manager, just to give me 5-8 return at best a year. Over the long term, you will end up gaining nothing but the idea that your money is saver in someone's else hand with a CFA. These are the same guys that got us in the mortgage melt down!
