First, you want to locate and identify the person or group you want to say Howdy! to. (See tip#1)
Step2
Once you locate your target Howdy! recipient, you'll need to calmly make your way to them. Take notice not to bump into anyone in the pathway of you and your target person.
Step3
On your way to the person, make sure to choose a path that doesn't spook or surprise them. The Howdy! greeting can be startling if you sneek up on your target.
Step4
Once you make it to the person, make direct eye contact and give a warm toothy smile and say Howdy! in a firm and friendly voice. (See tip#2) A good hardy handshake follows, be sure to maintain eye contact. A one handed hug or pat on the back can be substituted if the person is someone who has said Howdy! to you previously.
Tips & Warnings
1. Only advanced users of Howdy! should approach a group of more than two people at any given time.
2. If you intend on using a southern draw or Texas accent, please practice in advance as to not confuse the recipient.
3. Although this greeting is commonly used in Texas and surrounding areas, you can use it anywhere.
Please be considerate of your Howdy! delivery. Depending on the tone of your voice, you can convey a message of fun and humor or authority and seriousness in the word Howdy!

I say howdy all the time. It's fun and friendly, people respond positively. When I was in San Antonio TX, I said howdy in a store and the people laughed at me. Only in TX have I been laughed at for giving a warm howdy.
