How to Link to Another Wiki in a Wikipedia Article

With a Wikipedia account, you can link an encyclopedia article to another "Wiki," including Wikibooks, Wikisource and Wikiquote. Put together all the information Wikipedia has to offer! Follow these steps to open an account and create your links.

Instructions

    Open an Account in Wikipedia

  1. Step 1

    Go to Wikipedia's main page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page. You can also key in Wikipedia in any search engine.

  2. Step 2

    Go to the top-right corner of the page. Click on "Create Account." Register by providing a username and a unique password. The account is created immediately. Your username will appear in red at the top of the page.

  3. Link to Another Wiki in a Wikipedia Article

  4. Step 1

    Go to the search box and enter the name of the article you want to edit. Click on either "Go" or "Enter."

  5. Step 2

    Click on "Edit This Page" or "Edit" on the side of each section. This will take you to the edit page.

  6. Step 3

    Key in the article you want to link along with the name of the other Wiki. Put the name of the link you want in square brackets. For example, if you want to link to Wiktionary for the meaning of the word animation, the format should be "[[ Wiktionary : animation ]]." This will create a link, directing readers to the article in Wiktionary.

  7. Step 4

    Hide the name of the other Wiki categories by inserting a vertical bar. For example, "[[ Wiktionary : animation | ]]." Only the word "animation" will show a hyperlink.

  8. Step 5

    Preview the link and click on "Save Page."
