How to Link to a MP3 File in a Wikipedia Article

With a Wikipedia account, you can link any article to an MP3 file. If you're uploading the MP3, it has be in Ogg Vorbis format. Follow these steps to open an account and give melody or voice to Wikipedia's information.

Instructions

    Open an Account in Wikipedia

  1. Step 1

    Go to Wikipedia's main page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page. You can also key in Wikipedia in any search engine.

  2. Step 2

    Go to the top-right corner of the page. Click on "Create Account." Register by providing a username and a unique password. The account is created immediately. Your username will appear in red at the top of the page.

  4. Step 1

    Download a free Ogg Vorbis Converter. Key in "Ogg Vorbis" into any Internet search engine to find one.

  5. Step 2

    Convert your sound file to the Ogg Vorbis format. Save it on your computer. Make sure the file name is unique and appropriate. Renaming a file is not possible once it is uploaded to Wikipedia.

  6. Step 3

    Go to Wikipedia's main page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page. Sign in. Click on the "Upload File" tab/box on the left-hand side of the main page.

  7. Step 4

    Complete the legal disclaimer on the upload page. If you don't, the file might be deleted without any warning.

  8. Step 5

    Click on the "Browse" button to select the source file name from its location. A file selection dialog will pop up. Once the file is selected, press "OK." The local file name will be used. Use descriptive file names to avoid any ambiguity. You can change the file name using the "Destination Filename" field below the "Source Filename" tab/box. Renaming a file is not possible once it is uploaded.

  9. Step 6

    Complete the description of the file in the "Summary" field. Remember to include a brief description about the file, the source, date, author, permission and the license under which it's uploaded. Below is a model you can use for reference.

    Information/Description = What can you see/hear?
    Source = Self-made or URL
    Date = Date image/sound was taken and/or released
    Author = First name and last name of the author
    Permission = Short quote of the permission of the copyright owner (in case it's long, shorten it with a link to the long version)
    Other versions = Wiki link to other versions if they exist within the Wikimedia Commons (for example, a smaller/edited version of the same video file)

  10. Step 7

    Click on the "Upload File" button to save the summary and upload the file. Previewing the fille now is not possible. Once the file is uploaded, you can click the "Edit" button to make any changes to the summary and license.

  11. Step 8

    In the Wikipedia article, insert the caption of the sound file between two square brackets. This will display the file as a link. Use the following example as a model: "[[Image:Church.ogg|. This is Mozart’s composition at the concert in New York]]."

  12. Step 9

    Preview the article. Save when you're done.
