How to Add an Image Description Page to a Wikipedia Article

There's more to a Wikipedia article than the text on the page you read. With a hyperlink--commonly known as a link--you can jump to more information. Just click on the blue words. You can be even more interactive when you open a Wikipedia account. Once you do, you can make changes to any errors you see. You can contribute to articles by adding images. Follow these steps to open an account and add an image description page.

Open an account in Wikipedia

1. Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page. You can also key in "Wikipedia" in search engines like Google or Yahoo.
2. Go to the top right corner of the page. Click on "Sign in/create account." Register yourself by providing a Username and Password. Once you've been added, your Username will appear in red on the top of the page.

3. Once you've logged into your account, click on the "Upload File" blue link on the left-hand side. It's the third link in the "toolbox" section just below the search box.
4. Read the Wikipedia requirements for uploaded images.
5. Complete the legal disclaimer before uploading the image you want.
6. Insert the caption of the image within two square brackets on each side. This will display the image as a link.
7. Place a leading colon before the word "Image" in the syntax to link it to the "Image Description" page. One example looks like the following: [[:Image:Church.jpeg|.This picture was shot in the courtyard of St. Xavier’s Cathedral Church in New York]].
8. Click on the link to go to the "Image Description" page.
9. See the preview by clicking on "Show Preview."
10. Click on "Save" before closing.
