Drawing visitors to your site is as easy as determining the keywords that bring them there. But how do you determine which keywords to use?

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Search tracking tool such as Wordtracker or Overture
  • Web browser
  • Paper or blank document for listing potential keywords
  • Internet connection
  • Time to do your research thoroughly
  • Understanding of your product and target customer
  1. Step 1

Know your site well. Know your product or service and know how to describe it well.

  2. Step 2

Know your target customer. Who are your visitors and what are they looking for?

  3. Step 3

Brainstorm keywords based on your product and the customers who are looking for it. List as many as possible.

  4. Step 4

Determine which keywords can be combined to create key phrases. Providing more narrow search term options will help to ensure more targeted customers.

  5. Step 5

Connect to Wordtracker or Overture to determine how often people search for the terms you have listed.

  6. Step 6

Evaluate which of the popular search terms are not widely used by your competitors.

  7. Step 7

Utilize the most powerful and effective keywords to bring customers to your site.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you get stuck while brainstorming for keywords, consider using a thesaurus to find similar words.
  • Consider using common misspellings of your keywords. This is particularly effective in PPC (pay per click) advertising campaigns.
  • Just as great relevant keywords draw people to your site, using keywords that do not pertain to your products or services will drive site visitors away.
