The Amber Alert system was established in the United States and is used to publicize child abductions. Most areas that use the Amber Alert system have ways of informing the public if a possible child abduction occurs. Here is what to do to in response to an Amber Alert.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Local authorities contact information
  • Telephone

Step1
An Amber Alert will be issued when authorities deem that a child has likely been abducted, based on information from the parents and local authorities.
Step2
Amber Alerts are announced via television, radio, Web sites, highway signs and other mass communication systems. Regularly scheduled broadcasting will be interrupted.
Step3
Take note of the description provided by the alert. Most alerts will include a description of the abductor, the abducted, their relationship and the vehicle they may be traveling in. Possible destinations may also be included.
Step4
Remember all descriptions and be observant and alert.
Step5
Call 911 immediately if you have any information. Be as specific as possible, taking down the exact time, location, descriptions of child, abductor and automobile, and note the direction of travel.
Step6
Stay calm and hope for the best.

Tips & Warnings

  • Contact local officials to find out whether or not you live in an area that operates with the Amber Alert system.
  • Do not take actions into your own hands. This could cause harm to the child or to you. Let the authorities do their job.
  • Do not give false information to the authorities.
