Rig a Striper Lure

Are you going fishing for striped bass? Catching a striper takes the right kind of lure. Any kind of lure, striper or not, takes the right kind of knot to make sure that whopper of a striper doesn't get away when your lure comes untied. Start with a Palomar knot, one of the easiest and strongest knots.

Things You'll Need

  • Fishing rod and reel
  • Lure
  • Fishing line

Instructions

    • 1

      Select a lure.

    • 2

Start with plenty of line. You'll need some extra slack.

    • 3

Double over about four to five inches of line. Do this like you were making a loop to tie your shoe.

    • 4

Pass the entire loop through the eye of the lure. Don't let the loop come undone though, you want there to be two sections of line going through the eye.

    • 5

Tie an overhand knot. Again, like you were tying your shoe. Wrap the loop around itself once and pull the tag end through the new loop. Do not pull it all the way tight, leave a little slack.

    • 6

Pass the lure through the first loop. This is the loop that makes up the tag end of the line.

    • 7

Tighten the line. Do this by pulling both the standing end and the tag end until it is tight as possible.

    • 8

Trim excess line. Use nail clippers to snip off whatever is left of the tag end.

Tips & Warnings

  • The tag end is the end of the line that you'll be tying to the lure. The standing end is the rest of the line that will be hanging loosely from your rod.

  • Wet knots with some saliva before pulling them tight. This helps them stay stronger.

  • Give yourself enough leeway on the tag end so it is easier to work with.

  • Trim your knots. Don't burn the ends. This will weaken the knot.

  • Be careful not to hook yourself when tugging on the tag line to tighten your knot. This is embarrassing and painful, not at all what fishing is about.
