How to Measure Ski Poles

Without ski poles, skiing would be a terribly dangerous sport. Ski poles not only help you keep your balance, they also help you steer. Ski poles are perhaps the most important piece in a good set of skis. These steps will teach you how to correctly measure ski poles.

      Know there are three kinds of ski poles: classic, alpine and skate-style. All three are measured in different ways, so it is important to know which kind you want.

      To measure a classic ski pole, stand straight up with a ruler on your shoulder 90 degrees from the ground.

      Measure from the ground to the ruler, the resulting measurement will be the length of pole you will need for classic skiing.

      To measure an alpine pole, hold your arms at your side and bend your elbow to 90 degrees. This stance should resemble skiing.

      Measure from your thumb to the ground. This measurement will be the length you will need in an alpine ski pole.

      Skate-style ski poles can be measured by standing up straight and measuring from just below your nose to the ground.

Tips & Warnings

  • All ski poles are measured in centimeters. To save yourself a lot of mathematics and rounding, use centimeters.

  • Remember the differences between how to measure ski poles. If you are doing regular skiing, you want a classic pole. For more difficult skiing, alpine and skate-style are the ways to go.

  • Don't round off. If you can avoid rounding off your measurements you will be ensured a good fit from a ski pole.
