Things You'll Need:
- Dog
- Leash
-
Step 1
Have the dog move out smartly, maintaining heel position and giving attention. You want it to look as though he is glued to your trouser seam when the two of you start forward.
-
Step 2
Start forward without giving a verbal command to get the dog's attention. When you start, go forward at a fast pace so the dog realizes he must move swiftly. Do not give the dog a second chance here.
-
Step 3
Give an automatic pop forward on starting if the dog lags until he automatically starts forward with you.
-
Step 4
Get the dog’s attention on the start by doing an abrupt turn and running forward instead of performing a normal start forward.
-
Step 5
Give the dog an automatic correction on the next three starts if he misses a start forward. Then see what he has learned. Repeat as necessary until he learns to begin at once.
-
Step 6
Praise, release and give a treat when the dog does it right. Do not simply go on to the next segment. Make the start memorable.
