How to Use a Faucet-Mounted Water Filter

Faucet-mounted water filters are one of the easiest kinds to use. They are less expensive than an under-sink filter, and don’t have to be refilled or take up fridge space like a pitcher filter. As long as you have a standard faucet head, a faucet-mounted filter can be installed and used in mere minutes.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Faucet-mounted water filter
  • Faucet

Step1
Open the package and observe the instructions regarding attachment of the device to your faucet head. Each device is unique, but all of them are relatively simple.
Step2
Unscrew the cap that is on your faucet head, if there is one. Then screw the filter to your faucet head.
Step3
Turn on your faucet. Most filters have an on and off function, controlled either by a lever, switch or by tipping the filter forward.
Step4
Turn on the filter and make sure that the flow is correct. If not, consult the manual a second time or consider the possibility of a faulty filter.
Step5
Leaky connections may need tightening, unless you may have an irregular faucet head. If this is the case, bring the head with you when shopping to match it to the correct filter.
Step6
Turn off the filter when not in use.
Step7
Replace filters as suggested on the box. It is generally a function of the number of people using the faucet, and is usually on the order of months between replacements.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most filters will have a visible gauge to tell you when to replace the filter.
  • Replace your filters about every 3 months.
  • Make sure your faucet head is “standard.”
  • Do not use the filter if you are simply washing your hands or doing dishes. It will shorten the life of the filter.
