How to Choose a Faucet-Mounted Water Filter

Many city and rural homes should have a water filter if you want clean, refreshing drinking water straight from the tap. One of the quickest ways to address this is via a water filter that screws right onto your faucet. The advantage here is ease of installment and removal. Plus, they are cheaper than larger under-the-sink units and easier than filling up a pitcher filter each day. Here are some steps on how to chose the right faucet-mounted filter.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Test your water’s purity. You can simply look at the glasses for hard water spots. Call the local water district for a report or buy a testing kit from a local hardware store.
Step2
Find out what you need to filter. Faucet-mounted filters come in a variety of filtration levels. Some simply make your water “taste clean,” but some more high-end filters can even remove heavy metals.
Step3
Use consumer magazines and Internet research to see which systems filter the contaminants in your water for the least amount of money.
Step4
Shop around. If it turns out you need more filtration than a faucet-mounted unit can offer, you may have to upgrade to an under-the-sink model.
Step5
Shoot for a low number of required filter changes, and make sure that it’s quick and easy to change the filters when it becomes necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only buy as much filtration as you need.
  • Make sure you only need a faucet-mounted unit and not more extensive filtration.
