Selecting the right size dehumidifier is very important, but can be challenging. The various sizes determine different energy costs and effectiveness. However, there are several factors to look for when selecting the right dehumidifier.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure the square footage of your house. Many manufacturers make charts to help match the right dehumidifier with the right square footage.

  2. Step 2

Measure the amount of water, in pints, that is removed from the room in 24 hours. This can be done by purchasing a humidity gauge.

  3. Step 3

Buy a dehumidifier that covers more square footage than what the room measures. If you measure 900 square feet, for example, purchase a dehumidifier that covers 1000 square footage.

  4. Step 4

Determine if you need a dehumidifier for the whole house or for one room. You'll save money if it's just for one room.

  5. Step 5

Research the cost and warranties offered. It is always safe to have a warranty in case the product does not perform as advertised.

Tips & Warnings
  • When in doubt, go with a larger dehumidifier.
  • Humidifiers that are too small will run continuously without fixing the problem.
