You can repair the two most common problems of a window unit air conditioner with a few basic hand tools. Also, some basic maintenance will help avoid problems in the future. Here’s how to repair an air conditioner.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Clean the filter at least once a month during the summer. Dirty filters make the unit work harder and wear out faster.

  2. Step 2

Clean the evaporator and condenser coils at least once a month during the summer. Dirty coils make the unit work harder and wear out faster.

  3. Step 3

Examine the power cord for kinks or exposed wires. Replace the cord if necessary.

  4. Step 4

Check the switch for burns or scorch marks. Replace the switch if necessary.

  5. Step 5

Call a professional if the switch or power cord doesn’t seem to be the problem.

Tips & Warnings
  • Before doing any work on an air conditioner, make sure it's unplugged. Also, avoid the risk of electric shock by discharging the capacitors. Your owner's manual should tell you how to do this safely.
  • Do not attempt repairs to the coils, compressor or motor of an air conditioner. Call a professional.
  • Do not charge your air conditioner's refrigerant. Call a professional.
