Aluminum fades quickly as it is more susceptible to wear and tear. This metal is usually used in home windows and also in truck and SUV running boards. It is a commonly used metal for equipment and accessories. When exposed to air it oxidizes very fast. Consider your cleaning options before acid washing aluminum.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Aluminum brightener
  • Other cleaning equipments such as scrubbers.

Step1
Check out some of the products available on the market. Go online and browse for aluminum cleaners. You will find several acid-free formulas with excellent finish. Simply spray and wipe and you are good to go.
Step2
Identify aluminum requiring an acid wash, also known as oxidized wash. Acid wash removes the thick layer of oxidation for heavily oxidized aluminum parts. Aluminum components present in trucks, wheels, fuel tanks, tanker trucks, etc. often go through an acid wash.
Step3
Go online and look for products specifically designed for oxidized wash. The products are commonly known as ‘aluminum brighteners.’
Step4
Choose the right product depending on the severity of oxidization. A regular strength aluminum brightener will remove oxidation from the surface without penetrating too deep. Use water to dilute and make a 1:50 solution (brightener:water). Increase the concentration if you have heavier oxidation. Use extra strength for better results. Another option is to prepare 1:20 (Phosphoric Brightener:water) admixture and apply it on the aluminum surface. It brightens, cleans and removes grease off the surface.
Step5
Hire a professional if you are unsure about this process. It is better to pay some money than ruin your costly equipment or get injured in any way.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember, a thin layer of oxidation is important as it protects aluminum from corrosion and degradation. Choose acid wash if the metal surface is too dull and badly needs oxidation cleaning.
  • Check out the ANKO Products Inc. Web site. This Texas-based company specializes in aluminum cleaning products.
  • Read the vendor’s instruction on the product package before using it for cleaning.
  • Wear protective gear and always put on synthetic latex gloves and eyeglasses while cleaning. Keep a first aid kit handy at all times while working.
