Utility rooms are essentially service rooms, usually located near the kitchen or in the basement, which houses the washer, dryer and other cleaning paraphernalia. A clean and organized utility room can brighten up the room and make the chores seem less like drudgery and more fun. Keep the utility room clean to avoid making it a dumping ground for the household.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Vacuum
  • Dry washcloths
  • Trashcan
  • Mop
  • Cleaning products

Step1
Ensure that the washing machine and dryer are devoid of any used or washed clothes.
Step2
Collect all the strewn clothes, put them in a hamper and set it aside. If these clothes are unwashed, you may wash them after your cleaning is over.
Step3
Clean out the cabinets and storage areas where you put the cleaning supplies such as household cleaners, glass cleaner, mop, vacuum, laundry detergent, scrubbers, washcloths, etc.
Step4
Wipe the interior of the storage areas with a damp cloth. Scrub the painted exterior of the cabinet with a hard surface cleaner and wipe it dry.
Step5
Clean the washing machine and dryer with a soft washcloth soaked in a solution made of 1 part liquid detergent and 3 parts water. Wipe the area with a clean, dry cloth. Ensure that you don’t miss out the corners and crevices.
Step6
Dust down the walls and ceiling and remove cobwebs from the corners.
Step7
Unplug the washing machine and dryer and move it aside so that you can vacuum all around the utility room.
Step8
Use a wet mop with disinfectant floor cleaner to clean uncarpeted areas.
Step9
Throw away all empty containers of cleaners and replace them with new ones. Wipe the grime off the existing containers.
Step10
Take out the trash and wash the trashcan.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider laying down rugs all around the utility room so that the area remains relatively clean and pleasing to the eye.
  • Consider getting shelves and cabinets to store the cleaning products so they don’t look unsightly.
  • Do not remove the labels or warning signs from cleaning products. Store all toxic cleaning products separately.
  • Do not mix different types of cleaning products.
