Step 1
Identify the type of specialization you are interested in. Some specialized training programs will be sufficient for a career in forensic nursing, but not for a career in economic crime investigation.
-
Step 2
Study courses that offer concentrations or in-depth studies of your specialization. These are the courses that will provide the most specific types of training. An example of this would be California State University's B.A. in Criminal Justice, with a concentration in forensic investigation.
-
Step 3
Take classes that supplement your specialized career choice. For example, if you are pursuing a degree in Criminalistics, you might want to take several advanced chemistry courses.
-
Step 4
Find a university or institution that has a reputation for Criminal Justice or Criminalistics majors. The Ogeechee Technical College in Statesboro, GA, for example, has an excellent reputation for forensic science technology.
-
Step 5
Pursue certification programs that take 2 to 8 weeks to complete. These programs can give you the specialized training you need in much less time than with a separate degree program. For example, Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, NY, offers an excellent certification program in forensic photography.

Step 6
Talk with your superior if you are already employed with a law enforcement agency. In that situation, your employer may pay for your training.
