Determine if your state charges a sales tax. To do this, you simply need to go shopping. If you are charged a sales tax at the register then your state charges a sales tax. If you live in a state that charges a sales tax, you will generally need to register for a sales tax number if you plan on selling merchandise to the public as a form of business.

Log on to the Internet.

Conduct a keyword search for “[Your state's name] government.”

Click on the link to your state's government Web site.

Search this site for information on sales tax permits. If you are having trouble finding this information use the contact information found on this site to call, email, or write for forms, instructions, and general information about obtaining a sales tax number and/or permit. If you were able to find the right information on the Web site, download and print out all the important information needed to understand and register for a sales tax permit and number.

Fill out the required forms and submit with fees.

Determine if you have to register for a local sales tax permit. To do this, you will need to contact your local government. You can usually find the contact information for your local government in your phone book under the government section.
