How to Choose a Computer Training School

Between 2000 and 2010, computer-related jobs are estimated to grow by as much as 100%. To wedge your way into this niche, you need at least a vocational degree. But the fastest growing areas require a Bachelor's. Getting the computer training you need requires choosing the best school for you.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Decide what you're most interested in and what skills you already have. They will help you pinpoint what degree to go for.
Step2
Hit the Occupational Outlook Web site. Run a search with terms like "web design," "game design" or whatever you're interested in. The results show jobs that use those skills and tell you what degree you need to get the job.
Step3
Look for schools with the right degree. You're probably going to aim for at least an Associate's degree, but find a school that also gives hands-on experience that will help you get the job you want.
Step4
See how often courses are updated. Technology improves constantly, so should the school. Earning a Master's degree in Broadcast Communications will do you no good if you are working with old equipment and books.
Step5
Speak to the admissions office. Specifically ask how many of the school's graduates are working in the career you have chosen. The best schools should also have internships and job placement services to help you out.

Tips & Warnings

  • Enter an Associate's Degree program to become an engineering technician, radiology technician, medical transcriptionist or a desktop publisher. Usually an Associate's is seen as an entry-level qualification.
  • Seek a Bachelor's Degree if you want to become a computer programmer, game developer, a pharmacy technician or an architect. A Bachelor's is considered a strong qualification for well-paying jobs.
  • Stick it out for a Master's Degree to earn the big bucks in broadcasting or the motion picture and video Industries, as a science technician. A Master's is considered serious qualification for the best-paying jobs.
