Your choice of which Australian cruise you embark on will play a big factor in how much you enjoy the cruise. Australia is a huge place and there are a lot of cruising options, so make sure you take the time to consider yours before you commit any money.

From Quick Guide: Cruisin' Together
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Hit the Internet. Start bookmarking sites that offer Australian cruises; there are many sites that work like a travel agent dedicated to cruising the Australian seas. This is a quick and fun way to gather lots and lots of options.

  2. Step 2

Research the destinations. Each cruise you bookmarked offers specific destinations. Princess Cruise lines, for example, will let you choose between destinations like Sydney, Auckland, Tasmania and Fjordland National Park. Major destinations like these are easy to look up; hit the Internet again and dig into the destinations, taking note of what you like best.

  3. Step 3

Consider themes. More and more cruise lines are offering theme packages. This means that you can immerse yourself in a yoga cruise while you sail the seas to exotic locations. Most theme cruises don't cost any more than a regular one and if you have a hobby or interest you're passionate about, it is a huge added value.

  4. Step 4

Narrow your options. Once you know what you'd like to see on your Australian cruise and whether you'd like to be on a themed cruise, you can eliminate bookmarks that don't take you there.

  5. Step 5

Compare the extras. Find a 1-page summary of each of the cruise lines you've narrowed it down to and print them out so you can easily compare what each line offers. Things that are extremely important to look for are travel insurance, air fare (is it separate or included in the cost?), size of groups (the number of people you will be off the ship and viewing sights with), and ship codes (many ships enforce a dress code, for example).

  6. Step 6

Compare the costs. Many people make the mistake of starting with this step. It's important to find something you can afford, but if you base your search on fees you'll have a much harder time finding a cruise that you'll love. If you've narrowed your search down, you should have a small list of costs. Take these to the Internet again and see what early-bird specials are available.

  7. Step 7

Book the cruise and prepare. Read the literature that the cruise line sends to you. It will contain things like dress codes (if applicable), deck plans, dining information and an itinerary.

Tips & Warnings
  • The price of a cruise includes the cabin, meals, entertainment and transportation between ports on the itinerary. Most cruises charge alcoholic beverages and optional shore entertainment separately. Some ships do not have in-room phones, either, and you must use a pay-phone. Make sure that you have a phone card and some spending cash.
  • Most larger cruise ships will have plenty of free entertainment while you're on board. Look for an Australian cruise that offers a pool, exercise or cooking classes, gaming, floor shows and massages.
  • Get your passport before you book your cruise! These can take a while to come in the mail and you don't want to lose your booking fees just because you can't produce a passport.
