How to Obtain a Passport Application

Plan your trip well ahead to avoid any issues before your departure; it can take between 4-6 weeks to complete the process. The U.S. Department of State is the authorizing agent for passports; you can complete the application process by mail or in person.

Instructions

    Get Your Passport Photo

  1. Step 1

    Locate a photo booth or local photographer who can print passport photos. The standard measurements are 2 inches by 2 inches.

  2. Step 2

    Dress appropriately for the passport photo. Do not alter your appearance drastically, and do style your hair as you normally do.

  3. Step 3

    Make a copy of the picture for your records.

  4. Step 4

    Alternatively, take your own picture and crop it down to size. Make sure you are standing against a white background.

  5. Obtain Your Passport Application Online

  6. Step 1

    Log on to the U.S. Department of State website.

  7. Step 2

    Choose 'Get or Renew' Passport on the left sidebar.

  8. Step 3

    Select 'First Time.'

  9. Step 4

    Scroll down to 'To Apply in Person for a U.S. Passport.'

  10. Step 5

    Click on 'download an application form, Form DS-11.'

  11. Step 6

    Download the application and print it out.

  12. Step 7

    Fill out the application, and make sure to include a picture ID. Be sure to follow all instructions.

  13. Step 8

    For alternative passport information such as re-applications, passports by mail/renewal, or lost and stolen passports you must use other forms.

  14. Step 9

    Select the correct form for downloading from the left sidebar.

  15. Step 10

    Always make a personal copy of all materials submitted.

    Make a copy of your birth certificate and driver's license.

  18. Step 2

    Find the closest facility at the Passport Acceptance Facility Search Page website.

  19. Step 3

    Do be sure to take the originals in case of verification.

  20. Step 4

    Submit your application and obtain a receipt.

  21. Apply By Mail

  22. Step 1

    Make a copy of all documents.

  23. Step 2

    Seal the envelope securely, and register the package at your local post office.

  24. Step 3

    Keep the registration receipt and confirm delivery.

Tips & Warnings
  • The average passport photo costs $7-$15 and can be printed immediately.
  • Taking your own picture may cost you more to print and cut down to the right size.
