How to Obtain a Passport Application

Plan your trip well ahead to avoid any issues before your departure; it can take between 4-6 weeks to complete the process. The U.S. Department of State is the authorizing agent for passports; you can complete the application process by mail or in person.

Get Your Passport Photo

1. Locate a photo booth or local photographer who can print passport photos. The standard measurements are 2 inches by 2 inches.
2. Dress appropriately for the passport photo. Do not alter your appearance drastically, and do style your hair as you normally do.
3. Make a copy of the picture for your records.
4. Alternatively, take your own picture and crop it down to size. Make sure you are standing against a white background.

Obtain Your Passport Application Online

5. Log on to the U.S. Department of State website.
6. Choose 'Get or Renew' Passport on the left sidebar.
7. Select 'First Time.'
8. Scroll down to 'To Apply in Person for a U.S. Passport.'
9. Click on 'download an application form, Form DS-11.'
10. Download the application and print it out.
11. Fill out the application, and make sure to include a picture ID. Be sure to follow all instructions.
12. For alternative passport information such as re-applications, passports by mail/renewal, or lost and stolen passports you must use other forms.
13. Select the correct form for downloading from the left sidebar.
14. Always make a personal copy of all materials submitted.

Apply In Person

15. Make a copy of your birth certificate and driver's license.
16. Find the closest facility at the Passport Acceptance Facility Search Page website.
17. Do be sure to take the originals in case of verification.
18. Submit your application and obtain a receipt.

Apply By Mail

19. Make a copy of all documents.
20. Seal the envelope securely, and register the package at your local post office.
21. Keep the registration receipt and confirm delivery.
