Step 1
Spend some time on Cannery Row, made famous by John Steinbeck in the novels "Cannery Row" and "Sweet Thursday." While the once-thriving, fish-canning zone now vibrates with tourism, the kitschy shops and excellent eateries—along a beautiful bay—make it a don’t-miss destination.
-
Step 2
Set aside at least an hour or two while on Cannery Row for the renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium. From menacing white sharks to playful sea otters, kids and adults will enjoy this state-of-the-art center for marine life.
-
Step 3
For a taste of California’s early history, visit Monterey State Historic Park, where the U.S. flag was first raised in the Golden State. The Custom House and California’s first theater are among the nicely preserved structures on site.
-
Step 4
Take a side trip less than 5 miles south to Carmel-by-the-Sea, a charming coastal hamlet known for its lively arts scene. Upscale galleries and splendid white-sand beaches are just part of the allure.
-
Step 5
Get active amidst all the superb scenery. Options include bike rentals, kayak outings and even scuba diving.
-
Step 6
Take the scenic 30-mile drive south to Big Sur, one of the most dramatically beautiful areas in California. Among the stunning vistas here are Point Sur Light Station, nestled on a large volcanic rock jutting into the sea, and the oft-photographed Bixby Bridge.
-
Step 7
A closer scenic drive is the famous "17 Mile Drive," lying directly between Monterey and Carmel. From awesome ocean bluffs to the famous Pebble Beach Golf Course to the iconic "lone cypress," you’ll take in some unforgettable vistas.
