How to Use a Separate Component Home Theater System

After putting together your separate component home theater system, you are now ready to experience the system in action. Grab some friends and some popcorn and enjoy the fruits of your labor. This is a quick guide on how to use a separate component home theater system to make your viewing experience as enjoyable as possible.

Things You’ll Need:

• Speakers
• Receiver
• DVD player
• Projector
• Television
• Amplifier

1. Read the manual to find any component-specific information. With a hodge-podge of equipment, you want to be sure you know the functions of each component inside and out.
2. Turn on the DVD player. Choose a DVD and insert it.
3. Switch on your television and turn to the channel that receives input from your AV receiver. For some, this is channel 3, but sometimes there is a separate channel for video input. Look for an input button on your remote or component.
4. Select the correct source on your AV receiver, in this case, the DVD player.
5. Always turn on your speakers last to avoid pops. Adjust the volume and settings so that the audio can be heard clearly by all listeners.
6. Enjoy your show or video game.
7. Turn off your components in the opposite order used to turn them on.

Tips & Warnings

• If you are having trouble hearing the dialogue, try adjusting the position of your central channel speaker (see related article). DVD players and other sources also have audio setup programs to tweak the settings.
• If you want to tape something, set up your VCR or DVD recorder so that the source goes first through the recorder, then into the AV receiver (so that you can see what you are recording) and then send audio back into the recorder (in order to pick up an auxiliary audio).
