There are a lot of subwoofers out there, which makes it hard to decide which one is right for your home theater. The size of the theater room is the first major factor in making the decision since you’ll need something big to fill a large entertainment room, or a bit more modest when it comers to a smaller home theater. This article will give you a better idea of the options available when you compare home theater subwoofers.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Home theater system
  • Subwoofer
  • Computer with online capabilities

Step1
Determine the needs of your home theater. Decide how much space you need to fill with sound.
Step2
Come up with a budget then compare the various brands and models that fit your needs. Research those brands in consumer magazines, a local audio store or online.
Step3
Think about getting a passive subwoofer if you want extreme bass or need to fill a large theater with sound. They are powered by a separate amplifier which you will need to buy specifically. This allows for more options in the amount of power you want.
Step4
Get a powered subwoofer if you want to save time and money. A powered subwoofer comes with a built in amplifier. The two are matched together for the finest sound reproduction.
Step5
Buy a forward facing subwoofer if you want precise bass. The speaker either faces the front or the side of the enclosure and you can direct the sound to a specific area.
Step6
Bring home a downward facing subwoofer for optimum “feel” of the bass. They direct sound directly down and reverberate through the floor to your viewing area.

Tips & Warnings

  • Passive subwoofers require an amplifier to work, but do not need to be plugged in. A powered subwoofer comes with an amplifier and needs to be plugged in.
  • Forward facing subwoofers are good if you do not want to disturb your neighbors with sound.
  • Downward facing subwoofers are not good if you live in an apartment and do not want to disturb your neighbors.
  • Take your time in deciding which subwoofer to buy. And remember, you get what you pay for.
