How to Use Home Theater Subwoofers

The best part about owning a subwoofer is getting to feel that thump of bass and the deep sound effects in movies. It really gives your home theater a genuine movie theater feel. This article will help you get started using your new subwoofer.

Instructions

    • 1

Read all manuals for your home theater system and subwoofer. The manuals will give information and tips that are specific to your components.

    • 2

Set the subwoofer below your television, or as close to it as possible. Set it above the floor or entertainment unit, and pad the bottom with a small piece of carpeting or blanket to absorb any reverb.

    • 3

Make sure the subwoofer is plugged into your home theatre system. Your subwoofers connect one of two ways, either through red and white RCA cables or speaker cable. Trace the cable from the back of your subwoofer and see where it connects. Make sure they are tight.

    • 4

Turn the system on. The on button will be located on the face of your home theatre receiver. It may also be necessary to power on your subwoofer. This button should be located on the front of the subwoofer.

    • 5

Insert the CD or DVD you will be enjoying.

    • 6

Adjust the phase and crossover on the subwoofer if you need to. The phase and crossover calibrate how much bass will come out of your subwoofer as opposed to the other speakers in your home theatre.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure the subwoofer is on and plugged into the receiver. Trace the wires back to the receiver to make sure.

  • Adjust phase and crossover only if you need to. For more bass in your subwoofer, turn the crossover off. For more bass throughout the room, turn the crossover up.

  • Move the subwoofer away from the screen if you see discoloration on the screen of the TV. The magnetic field could alter your picture.
