The first time you use a home theater in a box (HTIB) system, it will likely take some time to get everything organized. After setting up all the physical components and speakers, you will have to configure the optimal audio and video settings for your viewing area, personal tastes and TV monitor. Here are some steps to properly use a home theater in a box:

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Home Theater in a Box (HTIB)
  • DVD movie
  • Television or projector
Step1
Turn on the home theater components using the remote. This remote can be used to adjust the volume levels, speaker equalization, power and playback functions of your HTIB.
Step2
Calibrate the volume levels for your various input devices, such as the DVD player. Adjust individual speaker levels according to your taste by selecting the speaker channel and raising or lowering the volume for that speaker.
Step3
Decide which mode you will use for listening to your movies. Various modes of surround sound, as well as stereo signals, will be processed differently to send sound to all or some of the system’s speakers in different ways.
Step4
Insert a DVD film to test your settings. After the DVD has been inserted, choose volume levels and adjust speaker settings for optimal results.
Step5
Adjust the DVD video output mode to fit your TV or projector. Some TV screens are in 16:9 mode, which is widescreen. In that case, make sure you select widescreen output for your DVD player.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adjust audio and video settings to your taste.
  • Choose films that contain digital surround sound audio to maximize your experience.
  • The first time you power on your HTIB system, take some time to familiarize yourself with the functions of the main buttons on the remote control.
  • Make sure you have selected the proper receiver audio mode to fit the source you are viewing, such as DVD for DVD movies.
  • Do not listen to music or view films at too high a volume level, since this may damage your hearing as well as your HTIB system.
  • Turn off your components when you are finished using them. Leaving stereo equipment on can shorten its life and waste energy.
