You can access Skype VoIP by simply downloading the Skype software, installing it and making sure that all the accessories (such as microphone, speakers and headphones) are operational in your computer. Here’s how to setup Skype VoIP.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Download the Skype software from the Web site www.skype.com. Click on ‘Download now’ link to begin. Go to the ‘Users Guide’ section on the Web site. Click on ‘installing Skype’ link. Click on ‘Get it now’. The downloading should begin.
Step2
Go to SkypeSetup.exe file. Bypass the warning dialog by clicking ‘OK’. Choose the language you want and click ‘Next’.
Step3
Review the License agreement. Choose ‘I accept the agreement’ check box and click ‘Next’. The installation will begin. You can choose to launch every time you start your computer. Click on ‘Finish’ to start Skype.
Step4
Plug in the accessories to enable your Skype service. You will need a pair of headphones or speakers to listen to audio and a microphone to send voice over IP. You can purchase these in the Skype Store.
Step5
Check the USB ports on your computer. Plug in the microphone using this port. You can plug in the headphones or the speakers using the ‘Green’ audio port next to your Internet Broadband or the Dialup jack on your computer.
Step6
Explore the video calling options of Skype. You need Skype Version 2.0 or higher to enable video calling. Make sure your Web camera is installed on the computer. Insert the USB cable to plug in your Web camera. Skype will enable video conferencing calls using your Web camera.
Step7
Conduct a sound test, also known as an echo test. Skype provides this facility to test your connection and setup. To test your sound setup, you can use the testing robot Echo123". Use Skype's Web site to call ‘echo123’. Your setup is now complete and you can start using Skype.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure all accessories that you wish to use are authorized by Skype. Ideally, you should not have problems with regular speakers, headphones or microphone. However, purchasing Plantronics headphones, Cyberphones or Olympia dual Cordless phones (available at the Skype store) are recommended.
  • Make sure all the cable connections are secured. Replace all loose or old cables. As speakers and headphones are plug ’n’ play devices, you should not experience any major problem setting up. You may need to configure your microphone. You can get more information on the Skype Web site.
