A best man’s speech is important. It’s an opportunity to show comradery with the groom and tell some funny stories. Plus, it might be how many people at the reception are going to remember you for years go come. Here are some tips on how to give a best man’s speech.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Pen and paper
  • Notecards
  • List of friends and family

Step1
Start your planning early. The longer you have the speech simmering in your mind, the better it will be. You don't want to wait and write it the night before the wedding.
Step2
Talk to the family and other friends of the groom. This will help you get memorable moments to share as well as discover any sore subjects to avoid.
Step3
Write an outline of the speech. An outline allows for natural delivery and improvisation. Throw in a few jokes, but keep them light-hearted.
Step4
Write the outline on a set of note cards so you don’t forget anything during delivery. Better yet, memorize the outline and deliver the speech off the cuff.
Step5
Deliver the speech midway through dinner once all of the guests have been served. The maid of honor and you will both deliver a speech at this time from the head table. Decide who will go first.
Step6
Start the speech with a timely joke and by thanking the parents and the person who presided over the ceremony. Speak loudly and enunciate so everyone can understand you.
Step7
End the speech by raising your beverage in a toast. Give the newlyweds a hug or handshake.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use your own discretion in striking a balance between humor and formality in your speech.
  • It is best to start with a joke and then move on to more emotional stories, and then conclude with a joke and sentimental toast.
  • Don't write it word-for-word. You don’t want to read text because it will seem unnatural and be boring for the guests.
  • Remember to thank the parents for hosting such a wonderful wedding. Thank the judge or religious person who performed the ceremony. Thank the caterer and wait staff for their hard work if you want to look like a nice guy.
  • Do not bring up any of the groom's old girlfriends or lovers. This is tacky and puts a damper on the entire wedding.
  • Do not make fun of the bride or parents.
  • Do not bring up stories of partying or womanizing. This doesn’t go over well.
  • Try not to drink too much alcohol before the speech. You don’t want to be a slurring drunken mess.
  • Don’t hold the microphone too close to your mouth.

on 7/15/2007 From my own experience when I was asked to be a best man, I thought yes what an honour but then, oh no, the speech. Luckily I could write poetry, so I wrote a poem and also luckily I hit the jackpot, it went down a storm, it was perfect and I had accolades all night from lots of guests and photographers. So I created my own website to help other guys and it has been very successful and I am so lucky to have had so much superb feedback from guys who were clearly quite nervous.

The beauty of a personalised poem is the fact it is personal, you can read it, and given time to practice, it can be delivered in a meaningful way and last but not least, you don’t have to let on it wasn’t you who wrote it!! But the real beauty is it is a comfort to the best man in case of emergencies; panic attack, too much to drink, etc. So if anybody wants help, I would be delighted to help out, just check ou
