Before going into the backcountry, you should always take an avalanche course. These steps do not substitute for a class, but will let you know a little more about going into the backcountry.

Things You'll Need:

  • beacon
  • probe
  • shovel
  • touring equipment
  • avalanche course
  1. Step 1

    Before going into the backcountry, always take an avalanche course.

  2. Step 2

    You will also need an avalanche beacon. Also, it is safer to go into the backcountry with other people who also have beacons.

  3. Step 3

    You will also need a shovel and a probe.

  4. Step 4

    You will also need touring gear. You can rent this equipment at most ski shops.

  5. Step 5

    Bring water and food. It is best to have a camelback to have water accessible at all times. Also, bring protein bars.

  6. Step 6

    Bring a day pack. Everything you need should fit into your daypack.

Tips & Warnings
  • You must take an avalanche course before going into the backcountry. Backcountry skiing is dangerous.
