How to Make Your Own USB Flash Drive

SD Card Readers were originally created to read SD Cards, which were created to store digital files such as photos and movies. I have discovered that one can store virtually any kind of file on them and use mine to take work home with me when my boss needs something I can easily do in my spare time at home. With the high prices of USB Flash Drives and their limited storage capacity, this is truly a much better way to go. After pricing USB Flash Drives and seeing how much they cost, and realizing that once purchased, you are limited to whatever capacity is in the drive. With this setup, you have the USB Drive, with changeable, flexible capacity, and can store any type of file on it you need. I use them to back up all my files. Another great thing about this setup is that should the SD card fail, you simply replace it with another one. Should the USB SD Card reader fail, you still have your files on the SD Card, and simply replace the SD Card Reader without losing your files.. I also love the flexibility of purchasing an SD Card of any capacity, and being able to switch it out at any time. And there's the fact that both of these items purchased together is always much less costly than having to purchase a plain USB Flash Drive with it's limited storage capacity. Once full, you must start deleting files to make room, or purchase another entire unit, while this setup allows complete flexibility in all areas, so to me it is ideal.

Tips & Warnings

  • The SD Card Reader comes with two small, lightweight caps -- one for each end -- which I find incredibly easy to lose. I took my Dremel and drilled a tiny hole in the middle of the end of each cap, took a piece of elastic cord, cut it to fit, tied a knot in one end, threaded it through the hole (going from the outside in), then made a knot in the elastic cord. I then add a dot of Crazy Glue to the knot to keep it from coming undone. Once the glue is dry, I do the same procedure to the other cap. Then I took a small shank button, cut the shank off, and with the caps in place, I took the Crazy Glue and glued the button over the cord on the middle of the back of my SD Card Reader. NO MORE LOST CAPS!
  • None that I know of.
