Got an SDA phone but cannot afford to get the total internet plan for $30? Get a T-Zones or T-MobileWeb plan instead and setup a proxy to let your SDA access the Internet

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • SDA phone
  • T-Zones or T-MobileWeb plan

Step1
Go to your SDA phone menu, Settings, Connection, Proxy
Step2
Add a new proxy connection, if there's any previous settings, delete them.
Step3
Use the following information to setup your proxy:
Name: T-Zones
Connects from: The Internet
Connects to: WAP Network
Proxy: 216.155.165.50:8080
Type: HTTP

Leave user name and password blank

Click Ok all the way until you return to the main screen
Step4
Go to Settings - Connection - GPRS, then add a new connection with the following settings:

Connect to: The Internet
Access point: wap.voicestream.com

Leave username and password blank

set Primary and Secondary DNS to: 0.0.0.0
Leave IP Address blank
Step5
Launch your Pocket Internet Explorer. Go to Options - Connections, uncheck "Automatically detect settings." and choose "WAP Network" as the network.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the T-Mobile CSR told you that T-Zones won't work on SDA, just tell them that you want to add it anyway
  • This method is actually legal, I have heard some T-Mobile CSR actually explaining on how to implement this method
  • You can actually setup your own proxy server and connect your phone to your proxy server if you know how to do this
  • T-Mobile might change the way T-Zones work in the future and it may not work anymore
  • This method only overcome the restriction placed with T-Mobile on port 80, port 23 for mail is actually still open!

on 10/22/2007 Works great -- the trick in this is to UNCHECK "Automatically detect settings". Otherwise I think the SDA tries to reset them from TMO.
