How to approach a rutted jump at the motocross track

With winter approaching, the temperture is getting good for riding (at least in SoCal). However, with the winter comes some rain, which can lead to a softdirt and a rutted track. Here are three steps in tackling a rutted take-off on a jump.

Things You'll Need

  • Dirtbike, prefferably a CR450r :)
  • Rutted MX track
  • A lil bigger cahonees (p?) than usual

Instructions

The key with most ruts, especially ones on the face of a jump, is to pick your line early. When approaching the lip, remember to look well ahead of where you want to go. Once you have your line, always look past the face and fully committed to the rut you chose. Never look at another line or rut next to the one you are running, as you will drift in that direction. Get on the gas. You want to do this for the entire trip up the jump, only letting off once you're clear of the jump face entirely.

    • 2

Continue looking forward and begin to squeeze the bike with both legs. Squeezing the bike enables you to better control it and allows it to ride straighter, which is always important when riding ruts. This will also keep the bike from kicking when you leave the jump face.

    • 3

When leaving the jump, always squeeze the bike with your legs. This will keep it straight and prevent it from kicking out. You also need to hold the gas on all the way off the face, and don't blip the throttle (unless you are an expert rider) or let off the gas right before lifting off. This technique will allow the bike to fly straight and keep the front from going high or dropping the front end.

When approaching the landing, maintain a neutral body position and began to prepare for landing. Once you land, hit the gas, continue looking well down the track, and prepare for the next obstacle.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose the rut that is the widest and closest to your natural line.

  • Choose the drier ruts, as wetter ruts can cause some wheel spin, thus decreasing yoru momentum.

  • Don't cross-rut.

  • Make sure your bike is well maintained before hitting thetrack.

  • Make sure your gas is on.
