Shoes similar to what you might wear on your wedding day (Most commonly, High Heels)
A strapless bra
Someone who's opinion you trust
Step1
Look through bridal magazines and/or bridal websites for ideas of dresses that you would like to try on.
Step2
Make an appointment at a local bridal shop in advance. It is best to avoid the weekend, since those days will be the busiest.
Step3
Bring your own bra and shoes with you to your appointment in case the bridal salon doesn't provide these items, or doesn't have your size.
Step4
Be open to try on dresses that you might not normally try on. You might be surprised at what actually looks good on you.
Step5
Get the opinion of the person that you bring with you to the shop. This second opinion is usually helpful when making this big decision.
Step6
You will probably have to try on more than a few dresses before you find the one that you love. Don't be discouraged if you don't find "The One" on your first visit.

on 7/17/2007 I wish I had put a little more thought into my wedding dress purchase. This is good advice.
