Dining out with young children doesn't need to be a stressful event. Planning ahead can make life at a restaurant more enjoyable for your family and those around you.
For children in high chairs, pack toys (preferably noiseless ones) which attach to high chairs with straps or links. This will keep you from bending down to pick up toys throughout the meal. Plus, you'll keep the toys off the germy floor!
Step2
Use table toppers to keep eating area clean. These usually come with colorful designs which can entertain children.
Step3
For older children, pack books, a magna doodle, or etch-a-sketch. The latter two items take the place of coloring books and coloring implements. No more crayons rolling all over the floor which you have to pick up!
Step4
Go early to miss the rush and not feel rushed. Many restaurants offer early bird specials which are great and cost less than regular menu items.
Tips & Warnings
Tired of the same items on the children's menu? Order an appetizer instead -- the perfect portion for your child!
I have seen parents bring portable DVD players to babysit their child at the table. I'm not a fan of these because it decreases family interaction. You might as well pay a babysitter to stay at home with you kids.
