How to Perform the Heimlich maneuver on a cat or small dog

Keep these steps handy if your small pet starts choking.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Hold your pet's back against your stomach, with her head up and feet hanging down.
Step2
Put your fist under the rib cage. Feel for that hollow place just under the ribs.
Step3
Push inward and upward at the same time in a strong thrusting action.
Step4
Repeat two to three times, then check for the object in your pet's mouth.

on 5/13/2007 Thank you for the tip! I didn't realize you could do the same for dogs as you do for humans. This is a very good tip especially for small dogs as they tend to choke on things more often.
