The Sand wedge is one of the most important clubs in the bag for the beginner and intermediate golfers. Choosing the right sand wedge will help you save numerous strokes, more than you think that you would.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Time
  • Money
  1. Step 1

First thing to consider is what type of course you play more frequently. Are the sandtraps deep? Do they have a lot of sand? Is the sand fluffy? Also, is the grass around the greens thick or are their run offs from the green.

  2. Step 2

Next is go to a place that has a fairly large selection of wedges, like Copelands, Golf Galaxy, and Nevada Bobs.

  3. Step 3

Sand wedges come in different shapes. There is the one that looks like a regular iron and one that has a rounded bottom. The shape of the sand wedge doesn't matter it is the degree of bounce. Decide which club face style you like and go from there.

  4. Step 4

Here are some suggestions for selecting the right amount of bounce on your wedge.
    * if the course you play has deep soft sand I would recommend a wedge with 12 degrees of bounce or more. This amount of bounce keeps the club from digging into the sand and getting stuck.
    * if the course you play has shallow bunkers with course sand I would recommend 6 to 8 degrees of bounce. This allows your club to be able to dig into the sand and produce more spin.

  5. Step 5

At this point you might be thinking, well I play a variety of courses with different types of sand. If you could only choose one sand wedge. I would go for something in the 6 to 8 degrees of bounce. This type of wedge will be good for tight bunker shots and tight lies around the green. If you're worried about getting your club stuck in the deep bunkers, try to think of sliding your club just beneath the ball. The sand is so soft that your club will easily glide underneath.

Tips & Warnings
