Dentures are considered a part of restorative treatment and their purpose is to replace missing teeth. Getting dentures requires major dental work and it is usually not part of the coverage in common individual or group dental plans.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand the different kinds of dental insurance coverage. Dental insurance has two main categories: preventive and restorative. The latter includes major treatments through endodontics, periodontics, orthodontics and implants.

  2. Step 2

Check your existing plan and see if it provides coverage for major care. Dentures fall under this category. Usually, an individual health plan provides coverage of up to 50 percent of the total costs for getting dentures.

  3. Step 3

Talk to your employer. Learn about ways to get coverage for dentures. You may not qualify for the coverage under a group plan and may have to buy an individual plan specifically adding it in your policy.

  4. Step 4

Go online and browse websites that offer valuable information on dental plans and coverage. You can use popular keyword searches using Google or Yahoo.

  5. Step 5

Talk to a local insurance agent. Say specifically that you need coverage for dentures. Also, learn more about the coverage under Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) and Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) dental plans. HMO dental plans allow you to choose a dentist or group of dentists for your treatment, while the PPO restricts your choice to the list of dentists available in your area. (IT'S THE OPPOSITE)

  6. Step 6

Identify the out-of-pocket expenses and upfront costs from the insurance agent when considering a plan for dentures. Also, understand the reimbursement plan.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check out discount dental plans. They also provide partial coverage on dentures.
  • Many employers offer 50 to 60 percent coverage on group dental plans falling under the major care category, though you need to ensure inclusion of dentures in it. All companies have unique norms and offer different kinds of coverage.
  • Most plans do not provide coverage for dentures that are stolen or lost.
