Step 1
Assess detailed information about each provider. DIRECTV, for example, was established in 1994 and has 15 satellites. Boasting the largest customer base, DIRECTV offers up to 250 channels through three different subscription packages.
-
Step 2
Dish Network, the second biggest satellite TV provider, was founded in 1996 and has nine satellites. At present, it offers up to 350 channels available through four packages.
-
Step 3
Look at the kinds of programs offered. With both of these satellite TV providers, consumers get Pay-Per-View and several music channels. Both transmit adult content and sports programs and also offer Internet connectivity. Both providers allow you to add local channels for extra, low monthly rates. DIRECTV has more channels and offers four high-definition (HD) channels; Dish Network offers eight HDTV channels.
-
Step 4
Consider your hobbies and background. Sports enthusiasts may want to opt for DIRECTV, since it broadcasts significantly more sports-related programs. On the other hand, Dish Network may be a favorite with people from other countries, since it offers about 20 foreign-language channels.
-
Step 5
Evaluate current subscription prices. Although the two are comparable, there may be special deals and promotions at any given time that make one more attractive than the other.
-
Step 6
Compare customer-feedback and market-analysis reports. Customer service is key: Both providers support online and toll-free ordering along with 24/7 customer service.
-
Step 7
Consider the equipment required and its cost. Both DIRECTV and Dish Network provide a free dish and a maximum of four receivers to first-time subscribers, and both offer free installation with certain packages.
-
Step 8
Compare other features. For example, Dish Network offers a lifetime warranty; DIRECTV offers only a one-year warranty.
-
Step 9
Compare music options. Dish Network provides satellite radio channels from SIRIUS, whereas DIRECTV offers 101 and XM satellite radio.
-
Step 10
Compare the cost of local channels. DIRECTV offers free local programming with most packages; Dish Network charges an additional fee.

on 11/9/2008 When all cable and satellite companies have bad customer service, DISH TV might be the worst ever. Tread cautiously. We have multiple problems with reception and our DVR working. What's their customer service advice? Keep calling back until it is fixed. No thanks. Once our contract is up - we are going somewhere else.
