How to Buy A Monogrammed Horse Halter

Selecting sizes & colors can make all the difference!

Things You'll Need:

• Most halter manufacturers have a sizing chart which goes by the weight of the horse. (MINI horses have an entirely different set of rules. Look for my MINI Halter ordering tips in another article.) T
• Know horse's weight
• Use measurements to determine halter size

1. Determine the proper size by taking some simple measurements. If you already have a proper fitting halter, lay it flat on a table. If not, proceed to step 2.
   Put your tape measure inside the front center of the nose and measure to the back of the chin piece. Double that measurement and you'll have the nose measurement.
   Now measure the poll/throat in the same manner. Double this measurement for the total crown/throat.

2. Measure the horse.
   Take the first measurement around the nose/chin at the level where the halter will sit on the face. You can use a piece of string, then measure it later if your horse is opposed to this process. Measure all the way around the muzzle, just below the cheekbone.
   Next, run the string from behind the left ear, under the throat and back up to the left ear over the poll.

3. The cheek measurement is not usually critical, as most halters are made to fit proportionately. If your horse has a very long face though, you may want to order a halter one size up from what the measurements dictate in order to get the extra length. Make sure the halter has an adjustment under the chin, so you can take up any extra length there, or have your halter custom made.

   Halter Color vs. Monogram color
   If choosing a dark colored halter, choose a light color monogram.
   If choosing a light colored halter, choose a dark color monogram.
   Dark colors do not show up well on other dark colors. The same is true for light on light.
   You will want your monogram to be easily readable both up close and from a distance.
   You may want to match your riding colors, or just choose your favorite color scheme. If you are unsure, ask for a few samples so you can hold them against your horse's face and see what you like best. Decide if you want the halter to blend with your horse's coloring and be almost invisible, or if you really want it to POP! Today's hot colors are lots of fun. Be adventurous. If you're still not sure, ask the seller what colors look good together. (They have seen a lot of halters and can probably give some pretty good advice.)

Tips & Warnings

• Monograms can be done on the nose or cheeks.
• The nose will be the longest piece, so try to put the longest name on the nose. ie., registered name on nose, barn name on the cheek
• If only one cheek is monogrammed, it is most often done on the left cheek, where the handler can easily see it.
• Monograms may include registered horse names, barn name, ranch or breeder names, rider names, or just fun sayings.
