on 1/15/2009 You are kidding arent you, aussiechick?
barbie is used ALL the time here in Qld. Pull out the barbie, dust off the barbie. City folk maybe not so much (although I still hear alot of them say it)but rural folk...for sure :-)

on 5/17/2008 aussiechick, where do you live? Here in the part of Sydney, The Big Smoke, where I have landed, 'barbie' is a noun referred to the instrument upon which meat is grilled, as well as the festive time, either afternoon or evening, when men grill meat and imbibe grog and their borderline to bad behavior is tolerated.

To my knowledge, "footy" refers to all codes of of football: AFL (Aussie Rules), soccer and 'gridiron'(US football).
