Things You'll Need:
- Butter knife
- Paper towel
- White towel or washcloth
- Washing machine
- Stain remover
-
Step 1
Shake the garment out to remove any loose dirt before washing. Use a paper towel to remove any wet mud. Make sure all removeable mud is taken off the garment before washing. For dried on mud, use a butter knife to pry up the caked on mud.
-
Step 2
Spray the stained area with a stain remover and let it sit for about 10 minutes. This allows the stain solution to soak into the fabric and help loosen the dirt. After soaking, use a white towel or washcloth to rub the stained area gently and in a circular motion. Most of the dirt or mud should come off onto the cloth. Use cold water to rinse off the fabric after rubbing.
-
Step 3
Spray the stain again with stain remover. Place the garment in your washer and wash according to the care label. Remove the garment from the washer when it is done and check for the stain. If the stain is gone, you can begin drying the garment. If the stain remains, repeat step number two. Try soaking the item longer the second time. If the stain is still present after washing a second time, you should consult your local dry cleaner.
