How to Understand a Satellite Radio

Satellite radio has taken the world of radio entertainment by storm. A satellite radio station beams radio signals to communication satellites that again beam it to the radio receivers on earth. This enables a satellite radio to cover a larger geographical area than the traditional radio set. Besides, satellite radio provides near CD-quality sound. Given the number of channels and programs, a satellite radio comes with a paid subscription.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Understand what equipment is needed to listen to satellite radio. First, you need an antenna to pick up the radio signals from the satellite.
Step2
Next, you need a tuner that will redirect radio signals to the receiver. A receiver is vital to enable you to choose your channels. Familiarize yourself with the different types of tuners available. These include car tuners, home tuners and plug and play tuners which are portable and can be used anywhere on just one subscription. But the plug-and-play tuners require separate accessories depending on where they will be used.
Step3
Understand the features offered by satellite radio. It offers you the choice of multiple music channels depending upon the genre of your choice. Besides music it offers news, sports, talk shows and even weather information with very few commercials (or none at all) , unlike traditional radio. Its programming is also free from censorship. But above all, it offers CD sound quality, much superior to the traditional radio.
Step4
Look at exclusive programming. One of the main differences between traditional radio and satellite radio services is that satellite radio services provide music exclusively from various artists. In other words, there would be specific channels dedicated only to a certain artist and this option would be available only with a satellite radio service.
Step5
Understand different packages offered by the satellite radio service. Traditional radio offers fewer channels but for free. Satellite radio is a paid subscription service. Different packages have different pricing (monthly or yearly). Upon your subscription you get an activation code, which will enable you to start listening to the station of your choice.

Tips & Warnings

  • The features of satellite radio also change depending upon the service provider. Currently, the three major providers are XM, SIRIUS and WorldSpace.
