How to Tell if Your Dog is Obese

There are several causes of canine obesity. Some are medical while others are environmental.

Instructions

    • 1

A quick check of the ribs is a good first-indicator. The ribs should be able to be felt when passing a hand gently over them. Also, a distinct hourglass shape should be visible.

    • 2

Check to see if the dogs face, neck, or shoulders have broadened substantially over the last few years (providing the dog is an adult).

    • 3

Look for an accumulation of fat at the base of the tail and across the hips.

    • 4

Check the dog's gait to determine if a "waddle" or swaying accompanies the gait.

    • 5

Notice if the dog develops lethargy, reduced exercise capacity, or has difficulty breathing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to consult your Vet prior to setting a dog on a reduced-calorie diet. The obesity may indicate a larger problem.

  • Determining obesity is more difficult in long-haird dogs.

  • This is intended for adult dogs, not puppies.
