How to Use a Thermometer

Temperatures can be taken in several ways. These instructions are for taking the temperature orally.

Things You'll Need:

  • Thermometers
  • Thermometers
  1. Step 1

    Shake down the thermometer until it reads below 95.9 degrees, if you're using the glass-mercury type.

  2. Step 2

    Turn on the thermometer if you're using the digital type.

  3. Step 3

    Insert the thermometer into the mouth, under the tongue.

  4. Step 4

    Leave the thermometer in place for 3 to 5 minutes if you're using the glass-mercury type. For the digital type, wait until the thermometer signals that the process is complete.

  5. Step 5

    Read the thermometer where the line of mercury ends, or read the display on a digital thermometer.

Tips & Warnings
  • Clean a glass thermometer with soap and water. Sterilize it by soaking it in alcohol.
  • Clean a digital thermometer by following the manufacturer's instructions.

on 11/22/2005 Hold the stem of the meat thermometer in boiling water for 15 seconds. At sea level, the thermometer should register 212 degrees. If not twist the small nut beneath the thermometer face with
pliers until the temperature is correct.
